Morse Code Day!

< 1 min

Happy Morse Code Day! Samuel Morse first demonstrated his code for communicating by telegraphs in 1844. Today, Locust Grove Estate, the house that the telegraph built, can still be visited right here in Poughkeepsie!

After hearing about the work on electromagnetism from a colleague, Morse grew extremely interested in the subject. Using only a key, battery, wire, and receiver, a machine was devised as a way to send signals across large distances. After the telegram was developed, a “language”, or code was needed to communicate. Samuel came up with the idea of using dashes & dots to create a code that is known today as Morse Code.
